Another Thing I am Grateful for....

Who am I grateful for today?  My two kitty boys!  Sweeney Fellini and Leonardo Pirelli!  They pretend to NOT get along, but, as you can see from this picture, they really do.  These little furry guys add laughter, joy and caring to my life and for guests here at the Inn.

Sweeney is getting older, and has his issues with arthritis and general cranky old guy syndrome.  But it still warms my heart to come home and see his anxious little face waiting for me at the back door.  And to have Pirelli run up to me as I walk to the door, and flop down to have his belly rubbed; now that's trust for you!

Grape Arbor wouldn't be the same without them!

First Snow in North East, PA

Well we did get our first snow two days ago, followed by some cold weather that I wasn't quite prepared for.  For some reason it feels colder than I expect it to be (maybe because it IS ten degrees colder than normal). But the snow coming down was beautiful, and it really made me feel like the holidays are coming!
But I do love the seasons; that is why I live here!  The winter snows make everything look so clean and fresh!   And the springs here are the most beautiful of anyplace that I have lived.  The many levels of greens and the cherry trees blossoming on Main Street are amazing!  The summers here are not terribly hot, but warm enough for fireflies and barbecues and fun on the lake!

And of course my favorite season is autumn.  For me September is the season of new beginnings, reminiscent of starting school.  Vibrant colored leaves crunching under your feet, pumpkins outside houses.

So -- despite others who complain, I am grateful for the weather!

Giving Thanks!

Giving Thanks!

Some of you may remember last year, on October 30, a large limb of a tree next to one of our houses fell on the roof of the house.  It knocked down a chimney, shattered some windows, broke some posts on a side porch, put a large hole in the roof and cracked the plaster walls beneath where it landed.

No one was hurt, although my guests in the one room where the windows were shattered were understandably shaken and frightened.  It has taken until two months ago to put everything back to where it was before the tree fell.

I can only imagine the trauma and pain for people whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, who even now are still re-building.  And as I look at the pictures from the Phillipines, my heart goes out, knowing how I felt, with my small inconveniences.

So thank you to the guests, who were so understanding as it happened, and in the months following, as it took time to try and find all the right pieces for a 175 year old building.  And thank you to all of the workmen who put up with my needs to have everything back the way it was (and maybe a little better).

It was with a sigh of relief, that the final painting was finished...and thank you!

'Tis the Season

 'Tis the Season

I heard my first Christmas music the other day; actually it was before Halloween.  Don't get me wrong, I really love Christmas music...but I really love Halloween, as well.  So why cut short my enjoyment of Halloween by rushing me into Christmas?

The weather has generally been unseasonally warm, so up until the last week or so, I wasn't even feeling like we were on the road to winter.  But after Corry PA (30  minutes from here) got five inches of snow on Friday, and I needed gloves for my run the other morning, I had to admit...winter really is coming.

Along with winter comes another beloved holiday--Thanksgiving!  Anyone who comes here KNOWS that I love food, so you know that I really love planning and executing a marvelous Thanksgiving dinner.  But besides the food, there is the REASON for Thanksgiving.   And THAT is what I want to focus the next group of writings on; because I have so many things to be thankful for.  So, for the next couple of weeks...right up until Thanksgiving Day, I am going to focus on all of the things that I am thankful for!
